At least I can say that the guild wars 2 wiki is good and can be accesed from the chat in-game. i have been playing mmos for 2 decades, and it is NOT normal to rely on outside souces to play. 1000s of hours in wow, swtor, tera, aion, FF etc. stop spreading misinformation like that.
Later, when you know what you're after, you can go after specific skins. I don't see a reason for a new player to after the supply drop. The best ones are the endless gathering tools and out of those the best would be the Endless Volatile Magic/Unbound Magic gathering tools. Another is the Mistlock Sanctuary Pass.
